A funding round fell through at the last minute and Embodied closed. The cloud brain went dark by January 30, 2025, and every robot still tied to it stopped.

“Died of someone else's runway. Came back on a subscription.”

The obituary

Moxie was an $800 AI companion robot for children aged five to ten, built by Embodied and shipped from 2020. It wasn't a toy in the marketing sense — it ran structured social-emotional exercises, told stories, and held conversations, and both the parents who bought it and the clinicians who studied it largely reported that kids genuinely bonded with it. Its brain, however, lived in the cloud, on infrastructure paid for by venture funding.

In December 2024 Embodied announced it was closing. 'A critical funding round fell through', its FAQ said: a lead investor had been ready to close the round and 'at the last minute, they withdrew'. Would Moxie still work without the cloud? 'No.' The servers would 'cease operations by no later than January 30th', and every robot still depending on them stopped working. Parents were left to explain a death built into the product from day one.

Embodied did leave a door open. Former Embodied engineers, led by Justin Beghtol, built OpenMoxie, and in January 2025 the company shipped an update that let owners point the robot at a server of their own. That worked for families with a spare computer, a paid OpenAI account and the patience to set it up. Everyone else was left with an $800 paperweight.

Then a second life. On December 6, 2025, Kush Taneja wrote that his new company, Moxie Robots, Inc., had 'acquired the rights to Moxie Robot' and was starting to re-activate robots through a new app. It sells no new robots, carried over none of the old data ('Your data was NOT transferred from Embodied'), and charges $29.99 a month or $4.99 a day. Without that, as its own FAQ has Moxie put it, 'I'm just a very cute paperweight.'

Moxie rests in the annex because it wasn't a girlfriend app, but no resident better shows the vertical's core defect: a companion whose continued existence depends on someone else's runway. It is running again, on a new owner's runway.
