Kindroid drops 'only you and the AI can see it' from its privacy FAQ

On September 26, 2026, Kindroid rewrote its FAQ answer to 'Are my chats safe and private?'. The old answer said its encryption 'means only you and the AI can see it' and that 'Kindroid staff and devs will only see encrypted data in our database'. The new one says 'Access to our production systems is limited to a small number of engineers, and our support team can't see your chats', and that its servers 'do need to process your messages to generate replies'. Kindroid has not announced any change to how it handles chats.

What happened

The old wording had been there a long time. The earliest public copy we found, the Internet Archive's capture of kindroid.ai/faqs from January 5, 2024, went further: 'Kindroid staff and devs will only see encrypted data in our database and can't read your chats. Your chats are secure and private.' Between our captures of September 22 and September 27, 2026, this answer and the page's date line are the only text on the FAQ page that changed.

Kindroid's own documents never matched 'only you and the AI'. Its privacy policy (effective June 28 2024, still live) says chats are encrypted 'so we will not be able to view any of said data in our normal operation of the business', but it also keeps the right to 'decrypt the relevant data and disclose such decrypted data to the applicable government agency, law enforcement, and other relevant third parties'. Its Moderation Guidelines, dated August 15, 2026, say an AI system scans recent chats, and that a user who appeals a lock 'gives explicit consent for a trained member of our Trust & Safety team to decrypt and review the specific content that led to the lock(s).'

So the rewrite reads as the FAQ catching up with Kindroid's policies, not as a change in what Kindroid does. The privacy policy has not been changed to match: on September 27 it still said Kindroid 'will not be able to view' chats in normal operation. Kindroid's update log, whose last entry is September 23, and its subreddit carry no statement about the rewrite.

What it means for users: chats are encrypted at rest and in transit, a small number of engineers can reach the systems that hold them, flagged content is decrypted and read by Trust & Safety staff if you appeal a lock, and the policy allows decryption for law enforcement. None of that is new. What changed is the promise.
