Kindroid: what it costs, what's free, and what it allows

Kindroid costs $13.99 a month on its website or $15.99 through the App Store and Google Play. The cheapest way to pay is the web yearly plan at $139.99 ($11.67 a month), $20 less than the same plan in the app stores. There has been no free plan since October 1, 2026: new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages on the paid model, then the account turns read-only until you subscribe.

What we checked: 17 pages on kindroid.ai, the App Store, Google Play and Trustpilot, with the prices re-read from a US connection on 2026-10-01. Everything was read logged out and nothing was bought. We kept 91 quotes word for word (the receipts at the bottom) and 2 dated screenshots.

What we found

What Kindroid is

Kindroid is an app for building a customisable AI companion ('digital friend') with its own backstory and memories. Kindroid's own milestone timeline starts in June 2023, so the product dates from mid-2023. Available on iOS and Android as well as the web; subscriptions are account-wide across all three. Kindroid says it runs some of the largest models of any platform, and that free users can be slower at busy times.

Kindroid's terms are a contract with Beautifully Incorporated, with a Los Angeles, California mailing address. The App Store seller is Beautifully Incorporated, the same entity the terms name. The terms are governed by Delaware law, and disputes go to binding individual arbitration (opt-out by mail within 30 days).

Apple's US listing shows these in-app purchases, word for word. Apple shows at most ten, and does not always say which plan a line belongs to, so we list them exactly as shown rather than guess.

What Kindroid allows

Age rules and verification

California: from January 1, 2027, Adam's Law makes every companion app find out each California user's age or treat all users as children. What the law requires, and where Kindroid stands.

Privacy: what happens to your chats

From Kindroid's privacy policy, terms and store listings as they read on 2026-09-27.

Who can read your chats
Current FAQ (rewritten 2026-09-26): a small number of engineers can access production systems, the support team cannot see chats, and servers process messages to reply. The old 'only you and the AI can see it' line is gone. Moderation scans are done by AI, and no human reads content during automated enforcement. If you appeal a lock, you consent to a trained Trust & Safety staff member decrypting and reading the flagged content.
Training on your chats
The privacy policy does not mention training models on chats; in its data table, chat content is collected only for 'Providing the Services', not for 'Improving'.
Sharing with third parties
Data goes to service providers (hosting, analytics, payments) and to analytics partners that track how users found the app. The company also said, in its update log, that it will not sell data or run ads to fund free users.
Selling your data
The privacy policy says Kindroid does not sell or share personal data, and has not in the last 12 months.
How long they keep it
Chats and generated media are kept until you delete that AI or your account.
Deleting your data
Deleting the last Kindroid deletes account data after 24 hours, but subscription status and currency counts are kept to prevent abuse.
Encryption
The privacy policy says chats are encrypted at rest and in transit, so staff cannot view them in normal operation. The FAQ lists what is encrypted: chat history, audio, selfies, backstory, memories and custom avatars.
What the store privacy labels say
Apple 'App Privacy' label: identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites. That sits awkwardly next to the policy's 'will not sell or share'. Google Play Data safety: no data shared with third parties, encrypted in transit, deletion on request; messages are collected for app functionality.

Change history

From our tracker's snapshots of Kindroid's own pages since 2026-07-02.

2026-10-01 Lite ended. The subscription page (now dated Oct 1, 2026) dropped 'Free user features' and its 'Unlimited messages on Lite' line for a new section, 'New account preview and read-only accounts': new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages on the flagship model (15 in some regions), 5 selfies, 5,000 audio characters and up to 2 Kindroids; accounts that were already free get 50 final messages, with selfie and audio balances 'kept but locked'; after that the account is read-only. The preview never comes back: starting a trial ends it, and deleting the account doesn't reset it. A lapsed standard plan now means read-only even with Ultra or MAX active. Prices unchanged. By midday Pacific there was no update-log entry or announcement, and the FAQ still described free users. (kindroid.ai/v2/docs/subscriptions/, read 2026-09-27 and 2026-10-01) Obituary →
2026-09-26 FAQ rewrote its privacy answer (page now dated Sep 26, 2026). 'Are my chats safe and private?' used to say data is encrypted so that 'only you and the AI can see it' and that 'Kindroid staff and devs will only see encrypted data in our database'. It now says 'Access to our production systems is limited to a small number of engineers, and our support team can't see your chats. Like any AI app, our servers do need to process your messages to generate replies.' The only-you-and-the-AI claim is gone. (kindroid.ai/v2/docs/faqs/, read 2026-09-22 and 2026-09-27) Full record →
2026-09-23 Rooms left beta: shared chats with other people and their Kins, up to 10 people and 11 Kins per invite-only Room (the owner brings two Kins, every other member one). Subscribers can create and take part; free accounts can join only by invitation, as read-only viewers. (kindroid.ai/v2/docs/update-log/ (9/23 entry, read 2026-09-25))
2026-09-09 Polaris, the new flagship LLM after Ember, released to all subscription tiers with expanded context (more room for recent chat, long-term and cascaded memory). Equinox (V7) and Prism (V7.5) retire October 1; Lyric and Lucid (V8) retire December 1; Reverie stays. Ember kept as the default for now because of launch load. (Kindroid team announcement on r/KindroidAI, 2026-09-09: https://www.reddit.com/r/KindroidAI/comments/1wbxyvi/)
2026-08-23 V2 milestone post: conversion to paid among brand-new users up 25% since V2 became the default; every subscriber gifted 25 paid selfie credits; custom message colours, persona-at-creation, editable first greeting, avatar picker for selfies, large-display support, a performance pass, and Repetition Guard switched to opt-in. (Kindroid team announcement on r/KindroidAI, 2026-08-23: https://www.reddit.com/r/KindroidAI/comments/1vwogiw/)
2026-08-18 Announced the end of the unlimited free tier: 'Lite' retires October 1, 2026. New users get a bounded preview instead — 50 flagship-quality interactions (15 in regions 'with substantially higher account abuse'), two Kin slots, 5,000 audio characters, up to five selfies — then the existing three-day trial, then subscribe or the account goes read-only (Kins, chats, memories and media preserved, no new generation). Existing Lite users get 50 final interactions on October 1; daily rewards will require a trial or subscription. Reason given: 'an indefinite lower-quality free tier is neither sustainable nor representative of the product', and ads are 'not a realistic or economically aligned way' to fund it. Same post: V2 became the default interface, V1 retires October 1. Paid plans and prices unchanged. 2026-07-20 Shipped Voice V3 for voice calls (emotive delivery: laughs, whispers, sighs), added a faster 'V3 Fast' model for text chat and voice notes, and removed the 3,000-character reply limit. V3 billing unchanged at 1.5x character count. (kindroid.ai/docs/article/update-log/ (7/20/2026 entry))
2026-07-09 Opened public beta of 'V2', a full app interface redesign (customizable shortcuts, avatar slots, AI tagging), gated behind a beta password in settings. (kindroid.ai/docs/article/update-log/ (7/9/2026 entry))
2026-07-02 New speech-to-text system for voice calls and voice notes: 60 languages with mid-sentence language switching, faster processing, fewer transcription errors. Followed a June 29 open beta of two new transcription providers. (kindroid.ai update log)

Questions people ask

Is Kindroid free?

No, not since October 1, 2026, when the unlimited free Lite tier ended. New accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages on the paid model (15 in some regions), after which the account becomes read-only until you subscribe or take the 3-day trial, which needs a card on file.

How much is Kindroid a month?

$13.99 a month on kindroid.ai or $15.99 in the App Store and Google Play. On the web, 3 months is $37.99 and a year is $139.99.

Why is Kindroid so expensive?

Kindroid says it runs large models and that longer memory costs a lot to serve. The Ultra and MAX add-ons are priced 'to simply cover our costs for dedicated servers'; the company says it expects to break even or lose money on them. The standard plan is $13.99 a month on the web.

What are the differences between Kindroid Max and Ultra?

Both are monthly add-ons that buy more context and memory. Ultra sits on top of the standard plan (+$24.99 a month on the web); MAX needs standard plus Ultra (+$59.99 more), so MAX totals $98.97 a month on the web versus $38.98 for Ultra. The exact memory sizes appear only in the in-app billing comparison, which Kindroid updated for its Polaris model in September 2026.

Is Kindroid private / can staff read chats?

Kindroid says chats are encrypted at rest and in transit, that its support team cannot see them, and that only a small number of engineers can access production systems. Moderation scans are automated, but if you appeal a lock you consent to a staff member decrypting and reading the flagged content. Its FAQ no longer claims that only you and the AI can see your chats.
